The last stragglers of the people of Israel rushing towards us as the waters of the Red Sea come crashing down behind them. Behind them, Egyptian charioteers and their horses are about to be caught in the frothy maelstrom.

Crossing the Red Sea.

The crossing of the Red Sea is one of the most dramatic episodes in the whole Torah. It is also one of the most significant events for the Jewish people, as it is held to symbolise the moment of our birth as a nation. The parting of the waters, and the traumatic and dangerous passage through to the other side, have been shown so many times in Jewish art. Here, I made reference to Japanese art, as I've always found fascinating their graphic rendering of the power of the sea. The Torah recounts that the waters were "a wall" to either side of the people crossing, and must have come crashing down with tremendous force.
