Moses

Oil on canvas, 120 x 60cm.

This painting shows a somewhat classical view of Moses standing atop Mount Sinai, holding the tablets of the Law. It is, I admit, not a little psychedelic in both colouring and style. I was trying to show the eternal force of the divine streaming through Moses, connecting earth with heaven, night with day, past with future - and all this happening in the eternal present.

The idea for this painting came to me as I was going down the stairs in the house of I-can't-remember-who, and out of the corner of my eye, caught a glimpse of an abstract painting on a wall, which in an instant suggested exactly the composition and subject you see here. As soon as I could, I scribbled the idea down in a sketchbook, and soon afterwards began work on this painting.
